5G/6G Architectures
The 5G Testbed at IIT Madras houses a comprehensive 5G network deployed on campus. This network comprises multiple 5G base stations adhering to industry standards, capable of catering to over 30 commercial mobile devices. The development of the testbed is a collaborative effort with CEWiT, SAMEER, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kanpur.

Key features of the testbed include:
-
Data rates approaching 1 Gbps
-
Support for a bandwidth of 100 MHz
-
Remote Radio Heads available in 16, 32, and 64 channels
-
FPGA-based PHY Layer Design
-
Adherence to 3GPP, ORAN, and 5Gi standards
-
Ongoing work on millimeter-wave operation at 26 GHz
-
Research on 6G focusing on AI/ML for the PHY Layer and capabilities for field-data collection
AI/ML for 6G
AI and machine learning are set to enhance the upcoming wireless technologies, making them more intelligent, efficient, and economical. At IIT Madras, our team of researchers is engaged in advanced studies and standardization efforts related to AI/ML for wireless communications. Through our Indigenous 5G Testbed, we gather numerous data samples for AI/ML research, and we offer them freely for non-commercial use. This 6G project is funded by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Some of the key areas include:
1) AI/ML for Enhanced 5G Control Channel Decoding.
2) AI/ML for CSI Compression.
3) AI/ML for Enhanced 5G Initial Attach Procedures.
4) AI/ML for Enhanced User Positioning Accuracy in the range of Centimetres.
